Shooting back in time
Story

If you’ve been wrenching Harleys for over 30 years, and have been in the business of sourcing and selling spares for the machinery out of Milwaukee for the same amount of time, sooner or later some realizations hit you with the irresistible force of a cannonball.

We all know that there are parts that are long obsolete, and still we need them, to keep that trusty old steed going. But guess what: they are no longer available, or only available second hand (aka worn out), or they cost an arm and a leg. Or the quality isn’t trustworthy enough to bolt them to your own two wheels. Or better yet, they never existed in the first place, and it was about time someone made them.

That’s why we set about and started producing the parts we were so sorely missing at the finest manufactories wherever we can find them. Whenever feasible we are using traditional methods, and the quality of materials and production methods is always state of the art.

Flathead Parts

Flathead Parts

Sidevalve engines determined the factory’s model policy for many decades and it wasn’t before 1973 that the last Servi-car with Flathead powerplant rolled off the production line. To make sure that these legends will continue to eat miles, miles and more miles, Cannonball crankcases, gear covers and cylinders provide that any tired sidevalve Big Twin can be put back into service.

Cannonball Crankcases

Cannonball FLATHEAD CRANKCASES

Stock replacement U-model cases which meet highest restoration demands. Cast from state-of-the-art materials and CNC-machined for precise fitment.

Intended to work with stock or identically constructed engine components. Finished and detailed like the original counterparts so these cases will smoothly blend into your old mill to give it a new life. For ease of installation both case halves are carefully matched and feature pre-installed case bushing which are line bored and lapped for standard rollers. Cam bushings are already in place, too, and reamed to standard size.

The selection includes cases with a smooth, uniform glass bead blasted finish and cases with an NOS (new old stock) finish. The latter means the finished cases are not bead-blasted but treated in a traditional process which gives them the appearance of new factory cases that had been sitting on the shelf for 50 years. Perfect for those "patina restorations".

All cases feature laser-engraved CB production numbers, which are registered and filed. Made in Germany.

Knucklehead Parts

Knucklehead Parts

A true legend and without a doubt one of the milestones in the history of Harley-Davidson. Introduced in the year 1936 the ohv-engined models proved to be a huge success for the Motor Company, because customers quickly realized the outstanding qualities of this design. Consequently it became the prototype of the distinctive Milwaukee Big Twins, that influenced all successive models to the present day.

Cannonball Cylinder Heads

Cannonball KNUCKLEHEAD CYLINDER HEADS

These Knuckle style cylinder heads are precise reproductions of the stock counterparts and show all the small details like cast-in number tags and foundry markings. Thus they make for great replacements for your worn top end or to build a factory look-alike engine. They are manufatured after 1940-1947 heads with big intake ports. The pre-installed, but unmachined valve seats are sized for stock intake and exhaust valves and hardened for the use of today’s unleaded fuels. Threads for spark plugs and head bolts are stock, 18 mm and 7/16”-16 respectively. Head bolt pattern is like stock, too. Made in Germany.

Cannonball Electric Start Kit

Cannonball ELECTRIC START KIT for Knuckleheads

In his song "Panheads Forever" David Allen Coe writes: ”she’s hard to get started she’s always so cold..." and this line pretty well describes the mixed feelings which many owners of classic Big Twins get, when they look at their bikes. Yes, of course, we cherish and love our old scoots, but sometimes they are hard to kickstart and consequently are a pain - in the back, in the knee, or in the a@@. Understandably sooner or later the strange desire for an - ugh! - electric starter creeps over many a seasoned biker. But how to achieve this with an old rigid frame Harley? Well, here’s just what the doctor ordered.

The Cannonball electric start kit for rigid frame Big Twins converts your classic kickstart-only motorcycle to electric start. After installation you just push the button or turn the key and your old Flathead, Knucklehead or Panhead will roar to life instantly. Another good thing with the CB starter kit is that it is almost invisible. The overall appearance of the motorcycle does not change at all and from 2 meters away you will have a hard time to spot anything. Primary housing, oil tank, rear fender - all can be retained, although a bit modified. The transmission with its stock kickstarter stays untouched. The kit includes everything needed for the conversion except for the battery, wires and starter button/switch, which must be purchased separately. If the bike is still equipped with the early stock 6V charging system you will have to convert this to 12 V, which means a suitable generator, coil and lamps need to be fitted. Detailed, step-by-step instructions guide through the installation, which is straightforward but which should be left to an experienced mechanic with fully equipped workshop. The kit is intended for the use with primary chain drive. Made in the Netherlands.

Panhead Parts

Panhead Parts

When the Motor Company introduced its latest ohv Big Twin engine in 1948, almost immediately nicknamed Panhead for obvious reasons, it was accepted enthusiastically by all H-D aficionados until its production end in 1965. However, it started a second and probably more important career in 1969 when it starred in the cult movie Easy Rider as the powerplant of Dennis Hopper’s and Peter Fonda’s choppers. The rest is history.

Cannonball MAG-12 Wheels

Cannonball MAG-12 WHEELS

If you’re serious about wrenching your Harley, you’ll always be looking for that special part that makes all the difference. Introducing the legendary Mag Wheel.

When in the 60s car drag racing started to move from being a pastime of a few aficionados to serious motor sport, equipment got ever more important. Among other things lightweight and truly round wheels capable of taking hard loads got popular. And there it was, the magical wheel, the dragster front wheel, cast from magnesium alloy. It was called mag wheel. Not long, and the first chopper jocks tried to bolt these wheels to their rides. A favorite ever since: the 12 spoke variety.

The mag wheels of yore with their respective sizes of 15” and 18” are extremely rare by now and about as easy to find as an Ironhead Sportster that starts on the first kick. Even if one of those beauties can be unearthed, it should be clear that time has never stopped nibbling away at the metal — and the task of making them compatible with Harley brakes and axles is another story.

That’s why W&W had the Cannonball MAG-12 wheels cast using the latest technology and state-of-the-art aluminum alloys which guarantee long-term trouble-free service. The hub design was changed, too, in that it accepts special adapters which allow for the installation of common H-D drum and disc brake systems.

The Cannonball MAG-12 takes its styling cues from the originals, but is certified to take loads of 350 kg per wheel, and engineered to be compatible with a variety of Harley brake and sprocket setups. The available sizes of 16” and 19” give a wide scope of application for that next custom project.

Choose from wheels with a barrel polished or MAG finish. For the latter the barrel polished wheels are finely bead-blasted to achieve a dull magnesium-like appearance. Made in Germany.

Cannonball Handlebars

Cannonball HANDLEBARS

Erwin "Cannonball" Baker would have liked these unusual handlebars during his grueling transcontinental rides in the 1920’s and in fact the design derives from this era when the first leaf spring handlebars were installed on motorcycles. The idea was to take some vibration out of the bars and add some flexibility when hitting bumps or potholes. However, we admit that you cannot expect too much in that sense. What the Cannonball bars can offer are stability and a unique style. They are made by a skilled craftsman in very limited numbers in a small manufacture in Italy so you definitely won’t see them often on other bikes. Choose from narrow Lane Splitter or wide El Jefe handlebars. All versions feature 1” Ø tubular ends to accept common controls and grips and a 2-hole fixture to mount custom headlamp/instrument brackets. Mounting hardware is not included and must be purchased separately. Made in Italy.

Cannonball I-Beam Forks

Cannonball I-BEAM FORKS

Once upon a time when there weren’t any custom parts you could buy from your local shop, the VL fork was a very popular item because it made your Knuckle or Panhead bobber different from the next guy’s scooter. Besides you gained half an inch of length compared to 1936-up Springer forks for improved ground clearance and a more stretched look. Now it’s time to revive those days of the golden 40’s and 50’s with the Cannonball version of H-D’s VL type fork.

  • Manufactured just like the original, which means I-beams and connecting braces are drop forged on a huge 10 meter forge hammer. This is the only procedure that guarantees these components stand up to the job.
  • The problems with installing the OEM fork were the large fork stem and the handlebar mounting so the Cannonball fork is modified in that it features a 1” fork stem for 1949-up Timken bearings and leg tops to accept the 36-up Springer inline handlebars. This makes installation a snap compared to the original counterpart.

Approved for 4-speed Big Twins thru 1986. Length is measured from axle center line to seat of lower steering head bearing. Made in Europe.

Cannonball I-Beam Springer Forks

Once upon a time when there weren’t any custom parts you could buy from your local shop, the VL fork was a very popular item because it made your Knuckle or Panhead bobber different from the next guy’s scooter. Besides you gained half an inch of length compared to 1936-up Springer forks for improved ground clearance and a more stretched look. Now it’s time to revive those days of the golden 40’s and 50’s with the Cannonball version of H-D’s VL type fork.

Cannonball Leaf Spring Forks

Cannonball LEAF SPRING FORK

The retro custom bike builder scene sometimes likes to experiment with parts of different brands on the same bike project. For example Indian parts are installed on Harleys and vice versa, with often astonishing results. Among the most positive mergings was the combination of an Indian leaf-spring fork with an H-D Big Twin rigid frame. This type of fork was used by the Wigwam in the 1910 to 1945 period which proves that this was a very successful suspension principle with excellent driving chracteristics.

Of course, the stock item doesn´t fit a Harley frame without major alterations, so W&W decided to produce its own version which allows such an installation without many difficulties. But, of course, not another quick and dirty copy with ugly welding seams and wrong rocker geometry. The Cannonball fork is a professionaly made part with a design as close as possible to its original pattern, manufactured by expert craftsmen in Italy. The first complete prototype was rigorously tested during W&W’s winter tour in Northern Canada and after that sent to the German TUV for a certificate of stability (included). Both tests were passed without any flaws. After that production started.

All test rides were performed with a rigid frame, 30° neck chassis, with which both handling and braking characteristics proved well balanced and stable. The Cannonball leaf spring fork differs from the original in that it features a 1” fork stem for 49-up Timken bearings and leg tops to accept the 36-up Springer handlebars (inline). A horizontal bracket to mount the headlamp is also there. The fork is wide enough to accept disc brake or drum brake systems. Rockers are drilled for 17 mm axles but can be enlarged to 19 mm. Wide Glide axles can be used but must be modified. Neither axle, spacers nor brake are included and must be purchased or fabricated separately. Each fork is shipped preassembled to insure proper function and fitment, however, all components are bare and require painting or plating. Made in Italy.

Cannonball bobber front fenders

Cannonball BOBBER FRONT FENDERS

As early as in the 1920’s photographs show bobbed, i.e. shortened fenders when the boys took off their JD’s rear fender’s tail sections or cut chunks off the front fenders at off-road events like the famous Jack Pine rally. This habit soon became popular outside the race tracks and enduros, and so the Bobber style was born. For rebel riders of the fourties and fifties who didn´t want themselves and their bikes to look conservative like the uniform clubs of the era, this modification was a must. And for today’s bikers who own a rigid frame Harley and who want to revive the good old times, our Cal-Bobber fenders are the way to go, too.

With these bobbed front fenders W&W went that extra mile because they are not just chopped-off stock parts, no sir. These versions have the embossed wing at the front and the correct sweep at the rear. That is difficult to make but looks so much nicer compared to the usual hacksaw method. Besides they feature the 3-piece constrcuction of original fenders with side panels which are spot welded to the center part. Premium quality made in Europe.

History

WHAT‘S WRONG WITH FAST AND LOUD?!

W&W advocates the sound of open pipes and speed. Because for over a hundred years the name Cannonball has been synonymous with acceleration-embracing internal combustion in bigger-bore cylinders: in 1914 Erwin ‘Cannonball’ Baker needed a mere (and record breaking) 11 days for his coast-to-coast run across the U.S.A., a figure that was truly hard to believe in his day, when the roads were more like “roads”. That he accomplished this feat riding an Indian is for us one more good reason to brand some of our best and most beautiful parts: ‘Cannonball’.
